About Doppo Nagata

Doppo Nagata is a skilled musician specializing in the traditional Japanese bamboo flute, shakuhachi, and quena, as well as an experienced music producer and bassist.

Osaka, Japan-Doppo Nagata, quena-flute player releases his 2nd album entitled “Soul Of Japan” in September 2018. It is a flute-instrumental album with a Japanese flavor.

By infusing contemporary ad-lib into his own Japanese traditional-modern music, he created a totally new conceptual kind of music. It all started with the Japanese traditional musical scales, Hirajoshi-scale and Iwato-scale. All 12 tunes in this new album are composed by Doppo Nagata himself by using these Japanese scales. He declares no one has ever created this kind of music before.

Although the quena is the ancient flute of Andes, he immediately found out it can express Japanese spirit. Its structure is similar to the Japanese shakuhachi. He decided to produce something unique which had a Japanese flavor. He conceptualized “The Soul of Japan” and released an album, "Resonator" in 2009.
Since then he has developed his own way of composing music. He uses Japanese musical scales and has successfully derived his own chord structures. Fusing sounds from the East to sounds of the West, Doppo created that signature sound he could only call his own.

After graduation from a music college in Japan, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in double bass, he pursued a career in Los Angeles, California. There he worked as a bassist in various live bands, as well as doing recording sessions. Inspired by the city, a culturally mixed melting pot, he acquired an extensive variety of musical genres.
One day he was asked to perform at a local Japan Festival in California. He realized this was an opportunity to present something "Japanese". So he conceptualized “The Soul of Japan”. He started composing tunes which had a Japanese flavour. Also he switched his instrument from the bass to the quena flute. His videos can be viewed at www.youtube.com/doppodoppo.
After releasing his first album, Resonator in 2009, after working nearly 2 decades in Los Angeles, California, he decided to go back to Japan to find out more about his own roots and to make his conceptual music more sophisticated. Now he is back in Japan and performing his music at local events and concerts. He has about 30 shows a year.

尺八・ケーナ奏者　永田独歩

「ミュージシャン永田独歩によるケーナと尺八の演奏」

南米アンデス地方に伝わる縦笛ケーナと日本古来の伝統楽器尺八の音色の違いをお楽しみくださ い。演奏会では、 ケーナで南米のフォルクローレである「コンドルは飛んで行く」や「花祭り」、尺八で日本民謡ドンパン節やわらべ唄など、色々な楽曲を自作バッキングトラックに あわせて演奏しています。

ケーナは南米アンデス山脈(ペルーやボリビア)に伝わる縦笛の民族楽器です。ケーナは日本の尺八にとても近い楽器です。その特性を活かして、日本の伝統音楽と西洋音楽を融合させた独自の音楽を奏でております。演奏会では、自作のオリジナル楽曲を中心に、日本のわらべ唄や南米のフォルクローレ、「コンドルは飛んで行く」や「花祭り」なども演奏しております。現在大阪府を中心に演奏活動を行なっております。地域社会に貢献できる音楽家でありたいと日々努力をしております。

2019年4月ベルギー3都市、ブルッセル、ゲントそしてアントワープで、ストリートパフォーマーとして、街角演奏を盛況に終える。2019年11月親善大使として、国際親善協会よりギリシャ、アテネでの演奏会に参加。また交流訪問でアテネのペリーニ音楽学校で演奏。

きっかけ：アメリカ西海岸ロサンゼルスに住んでいたとき、友達の家に飾ってあったケーナを(その当時はケーナだとは知らない)手に取り吹いてみたところ、一瞬にして「これが探し求めていた音だ！」とひらめく。その和風の音色と尺八に似たフレーズ感に魅了され、この楽器のために作曲してみようと思いつく。当時アメリカの音楽にどっぷり浸かっていた永田を思わぬ角度から不意を突いた瞬間がこのケーナとの出会いであった。それと同時期にしてロサンゼルスで日本文化を紹介するイベントに出演する機会に恵まれる。それに間に合うように楽曲制作を進め、普段から一緒にやっているロック/ジャズ ミュジシャンを集めバンドを結成。そのリハーサルで今のソウル オブ ジャパンの構想が形成された。

ケーナ奏者永田独歩の第二弾がついに完成！「ケーナだから南米の曲を演奏しなくてはならない」なんていう常識をぶち破り、永田自身が書き下ろした和洋折衷かつ温故知新なオリジナル曲で楽器ケーナの常識を打破！そのタイトルも”ソウルオヴジャパン”やまとごころである。

１作目の Soul Of Japan, Resonator から９年ぶりの新作、全曲書き下ろし。、リフレシュし、新たに動き出した永田が2016年の春からこのアルバムの作曲を始める。ライブ活動の合間に作曲、録音そしてミックスをして、2018年春に完成。

ケーナのアルバムなんて世界中探してもそうはない。南米のフォルクローレならまずしも、モダンでコンテンポラリーなものは殆どと言っていいほど無いだろう。そういう点においても永田独歩のこのアルバムはケーナの可能性を突き詰めた屈指のアルバムだと言えるのではないだろうか。

人種の坩堝（ルツボ）ロサンゼルスであらゆるジャンルの音楽と向き合った経験を元に音楽が作曲されており、一つのジャンルで括ることは容易では無いが、あえて言うなれば、モダンなアドリブ即興演奏もあり、ジャズ/ワールド/フュージョンと言えるであろう。

トラックは全ての楽器を永田自身が演奏しています。リズムビートもバラエティーに富んでおり、12曲全てが個性の強い違ったビートになっており、その上で繰り広げられる永田の和を感じさせるケーナのメロディーは絶妙の雰囲気を醸し出している。この点もこのアルバムを楽しむ上での秘訣であろう。
